COMING IN OCTOBER – GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY 2019

image2

For this year's Women in Aviation International (WAI) Girls in Aviation Day, the WAI San Diego Chapter and the USS Midway's Youth Programs Office will host up to 200 girls between the ages of 8 to 17 on a specially tailored, aviation-themed Youth Overnight Program.

The girls will visit every aviation-related part of the aircraft carrier, including an evening of observing the flight deck under the stars. They will sleep in authentic enlisted berthing spaces used by Midway Sailors, and will have dinner and breakfast in the original ship's Galley. The program will also include the students having time on the USS Midway's flight simulators.

The WAI San Diego Chapter President and Board of Directors will also be on the ship for the full program, and there will be a special guest speaker!

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED AS ALL 200 SPOTS ARE FULL!

If you would like to get on the waiting list in case we have cancellations, please contact Chapter President Jill Meyers at waisd.pres@gmail.com

On Saturday, October 13, 2018, WAI San Diego hosted our 4th annual Girls in Aviation Day. WAI HQ reported a total of 15,000 attendees around the world. Some 103 chapters and corporate members held 98 events in 14 countries, including 36 states in the U.S.

The 2018 WAI San Diego event was held at the San Diego International  Airport (KSAN). The day started with a career panel including Angela Shafer Payne, Vice President of Planning and Operations  at KSAN; Linda Hapgood from Boeing; USAF Lt Colonel Amy Gangolea; and our very own 1Lt Paris Krula, USAF Aircraft Maintenance Officer!

The San Diego Regional Airport Authority provided our attendees a private tour of the KSAN tarmac. The Air Force team from March Air Reserve Base gave the girls a tour of the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft which was flown in just for our event! Southwest  Airlines hosted a behind-the-scenes tour of Southwest  Airlines operations and ground handling.

We hosted 38 girls from our community with various  backgrounds and aspirations in aviation. Each attendee received a WAI Girls in Aviation day T-shirt and several goodie bags full of aviation-related items donated by our sponsors. Our event's success is credited to our amazing volunteer chapter members and our event sponsors, shown below.
