GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY – September 22, 2015

WAI  San Diego's 2015 Girls in Aviation Day event was held on September 22nd at Premier Jet (now Atlantic Aviation), at McClellan-Palomar Airport. We hosted 45 girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 16, mostly from  local community organizations including Girls, Inc. and the Boys and  Girls Club of Oceanside.

The day included a career panel of eight  women in different aviation jobs: an aerospace engineer, an air traffic  controller, an airframe & powerplant mechanic, an airline pilot, a  charter pilot, a Naval Aviator, a flight attendant, and the founder/CEO  of a drone company. The kids had the opportunity to climb inside and  learn about two different airplanes, an L-3 jet trainer and a corporate  business jet.

Ten  education-related organizations, including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical  University and Miramar College, set up information tables  and spoke  about aviation academic programs.

Our local Navy colleagues flew in an MH-60 Seahawk helicopter with an all-female crew, definitely the highlight of the day! The girls talked with the crew and learned about helicopters and being a Naval aviator.
